In Memory of Fred J. Paul

City Treasurer, Fred J. Paul, passed away January 18, 2018. Fred, a Korean War veteran, and his wife, Lucille (who predeceased Fred in 2001) moved to Northlake in 1959. Fred was very active in Little League and soon became active in civic affairs. He was appointed by Mayor Eugene Doyle to the Police and Fire Commission in 1971, and was elected as an alderman for the 4th Ward in 1973, serving 5 terms. In 1991 while in his 5th term as 4th Ward Alderman, he was redistricted out of his ward into the newly re-drawn 3rd Ward.  Although eligible to serve the remaining 2 years of his term as 4th Ward Alderman, Fred ran for election in his new ward and was elected as 3rd Ward Alderman in April 1991, serving until 1995, for a total of 22 years as alderman of the 3rd and 4th wards.

In 19976, he ran for City Treasurer and was swept into office with the rest of Mayor Jeffrey T. Sherwin’s slate after a hard fought election which saw a 58% voter turnout, a record for local elections. Fred served as City Treasurer for 21 years, up to the time of his death. For a total of 45 years serving the residents of Northlake, Fred’s record of civic engagement is unparalleled and his contributions will certainly be missed.

Fred was the beloved father of Mary Lou (Jim) Miller, Patti Paul, Chris (late Therese) Paul, and Gina (Chris) Devers.  Proud Grandfather of Matthew, Mallory, Amanda, Gina, Jonathan, Zachary, Charlotte, Carrie, Marli, Joshua, and Danny.  Dear Great Grandfather of Alexandra, Adrian, Kailee, Logan, Hannah, Leeah, Andi, Avery, and Mia.  Uncle and dear friend of many.
