Heating Safety Tips

Heating equipment is one of the leading cause of home fire deaths. Half of home heating equipment fires are reported during the winter months. Some simple steps can prevent most heating related fires from occurring.

  1. Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove or space heaters.
  2. Never use your oven to heat the home.
  3. Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  4. Always use the right kind of fuel for fuel burning space heaters.
  5. Have a qualified professional clean and inspect your furnace and fireplace very year.
  6. Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
  7. Test smoke alarms at lease once a week.
