City to Change Waste Hauler

The City’s trash collection fund was running at a $35,000 annual deficit for the past few years.  Rather than automatically raise fees and taxes to cover the deficit, it was decided to explore the possibility of re-bidding the garbage contractor first.

Third ward Alderman Ed Gonzalez led the effort and as a result, the proposal submitted by Lake Shore Recycling will save residents $400,000 over the next 7 years.

While the City may not be able to lower the current rates, it is anticipated that the rates will remain the same for the life of the new contract which takes effect on January 1, 2021.

Garbage collection will remain on Fridays. More information will be sent out in advance of the changeover.
