utilizes a comprehensive fleet maintenance program that extends the life of the vehicle through
scheduled routine maintenance as well as attention to repair small problems before they escalate
into larger ones. The Department utilizes a 7-year vehicle purchase plan that allows for planning
and budgeting anticipated cost increases for the needs of the Department. The goal of the
City is to provide our officers with safe and properly maintained vehicles to service our citizens.
Safety is the highest priority.
Communications Center
The
Communications Center boasts three computer-aided dispatch positions, a new emergency phone system, and
other high-tech equipment. The Communications Center has its own air conditioning system and
other support systems to enhance the work environment of Communications personnel.
The
Communications Division is staffed by a supervisor and six telecommunicators who are all state
certified. All Communications personnel are provided on-going training in the latest techniques
and to keep abreast of technological advances. Communications personnel are responsible
for answering over 150,000 phone calls each year and handling dispatch responsibilities for over
32,000 calls for service each year. Two dispatchers are on duty during peak periods to handle the
volume of work. Communications personnel are also responsible for monitoring jail facilities and
overall building security. The Communications Center is the operational hub of the Department.
Exercise Facility

utilized on a 24-hour per day
basis by Department personnel working various shifts. Equipment consists of cardiovascular
machines as well as weight machines and free weights. The Department places a great deal of emphasis
on physical fitness and has an officer who is a certified physical fitness instructor trained at the
Cooper Institute of Dallas, Texas. The fitness instructor prepares workout programs for personnel
who request them and monitors the employee's progress.
